Psalm 103:8 — The Mercy You Keep Running From (And Why It’s Still Chasing You)

Psalm 103:8 — The Mercy You Keep Running From (And Why It’s Still Chasing You)

Psalm 103:8

“The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness.”

I didn’t always believe this verse.

Not really.

I knew it… I could quote it… I could even teach it. But deep inside, there was a quiet tension—like a knot I couldn’t untie:

“If God is truly merciful… why do I still feel so far from Him?”

Have you ever felt that?

Like you’re walking with God… but also hiding from Him at the same time?

The Hidden Struggle We Don’t Talk About

Let me be honest.

There were moments I avoided prayer—not because I didn’t believe, but because I did.

Because I thought:

  • “I messed up again.”

  • “I should know better by now.”

  • “God must be tired of me.”

So instead of running to Him… I pulled back.

Quietly.

Politely.

Religiously.

But inside? I was distant.

What David Saw That We Miss

King David—the one who wrote Psalm 103—was not speaking as someone perfect.

He was speaking as someone who failed deeply… and still encountered mercy.

He didn’t say:

  • “The Lord is occasionally merciful.”

  • “The Lord is merciful when I get it right.”

He said:

👉 “The LORD is merciful…”

This is not a mood.

This is His nature.

But Here’s the Problem

We don’t struggle with God’s mercy.

We struggle with receiving it.

Why?

Because something inside us whispers:

  • “You need to earn your way back.”

  • “You need to fix yourself first.”

  • “You need to prove you’re serious this time.”

But listen carefully…

That voice does not sound like the voice of Yeshua.

Yeshua Confronts This Lie Head-On

In the Gospel, Yeshua tells a story that exposes this exact struggle:

The Lost Son (Luke 15:11–24)

A son walks away… wastes everything… and ends up broken.

When he finally returns, he prepares a speech:

  • “I am no longer worthy…”

  • “Make me like a servant…”

But before he can finish…

The father runs.

He doesn’t wait.

He doesn’t lecture.

He doesn’t test sincerity.

He restores.

Let that sink in.

Because this is where many of us disconnect.

We believe:

  • God forgives… but keeps distance

  • God restores… but slowly

  • God loves… but cautiously

But Yeshua reveals something radically different:

👉 God moves toward you faster than your shame can run.

“Slow to Anger” — Not What You Think

Psalm 103:8 says God is slow to anger.

In Hebrew thought, this phrase paints a vivid picture:

It literally implies long of nostrils—meaning it takes a long time for anger to “heat up.”

In other words:

  • God is not reactive

  • God is not easily triggered

  • God is not looking for a reason to reject you

This completely dismantles the image many of us carry.

So Why Do We Still Feel Distant?

Let’s get practical.

Here’s what I discovered in my own life:

Distance from God is rarely about sin itself…

It’s about what we believe after we sin.

We start to believe:

  • “I’ve gone too far this time”

  • “God is disappointed in me”

  • “I need to clean myself up before coming back”

But Scripture says the opposite.

God’s Invitation Has Never Changed

Listen to this:

Isaiah 55:7

“Let the wicked forsake his way… let him return to the LORD, and He will have mercy on him… for He will abundantly pardon.”

Not reluctantly pardon.

Not partially pardon.

👉 Abundantly pardon.

And Yeshua echoes this heart again:

Matthew 11:28

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Not:

  • “Come when you’re fixed”

  • “Come when you’re strong”

But:

👉 Come when you’re tired… burdened… and messy

The Real Barrier Isn’t God—It’s Us

If I can say it plainly:

God is not holding back from you.

You might be holding back from Him.

And I say that gently… because I’ve been there.

Here’s what changed everything for me:

I stopped trying to approach God as someone who needed to qualify…

And I started approaching Him as someone who needed mercy.

What “Abundant Lovingkindness” Really Means

Psalm 103:8 says He is abundant in lovingkindness.

This word—chesed—is one of the deepest covenant words in Scripture.

It means:

  • Loyal love

  • Covenant faithfulness

  • Unbreakable commitment

This is not surface-level kindness.

This is:

👉 “I chose you, and I’m not walking away.”

A Question That Might Change Everything

What if…

God is not waiting for you to come back perfectly—

But simply waiting for you to come back honestly?

How to Step Back Into His Mercy (Practically)

If you feel distant right now, start here:

1. Stop Editing Your Prayers

Don’t clean it up.

Say it raw.

  • “God, I feel far.”

  • “God, I don’t understand.”

  • “God, I messed up again.”

He already knows.

2. Return Immediately, Not Eventually

Delay feeds distance.

Return quickly—even if it feels awkward.

3. Replace Shame With Truth

When shame says:

  • “You’re not worthy”

Answer with Scripture:

  • “The LORD is merciful and gracious…” (Psalm 103:8)

4. See God Through Yeshua’s Actions

Watch how Yeshua treats:

  • the broken

  • the outcast

  • the sinner

That is the Father’s heart revealed.

The Moment That Changed Me

I remember one night… I finally stopped pretending.

I came before God with nothing polished.

No performance.

No spiritual language.

Just honesty.

And instead of feeling rejected…

I felt something unexpected:

Peace.

Not because I deserved it.

But because He is exactly who Psalm 103:8 says He is.

Final Truth to Hold Onto

You may run.

You may hide.

You may delay.

But you cannot out-distance:

  • His mercy

  • His patience

  • His lovingkindness

Psalm 103:8 isn’t just theology…

👉 It’s an invitation.

An invitation to stop striving…

And finally come home.

If this stirred something in you, I can help you go deeper—maybe unpack another Psalm or explore how Yeshua fulfills these truths in even more detail.
