When Nations Turn Against Israel - What the Bible Already Told Us (And How Believers Should Respond)

When Nations Turn Against Israel - What the Bible Already Told Us (And How Believers Should Respond)

A Rising Wave of Hostility… But an Ancient Story

Something is shifting in the world.

Recent conversations, polls, and headlines show something that once felt unthinkable in America:

More people are beginning to view Israel negatively than positively.

For many Messianic Jewish believers, this trend can feel confusing, painful, and even frightening.

How did we get here?

Why are attitudes toward Israel changing?

And more importantly:

What does the Bible say about moments like this?

The truth is both sobering and deeply comforting.

Because long before modern polls, long before politics, long before nations existed as we know them today…

Scripture already told this story.

The First Family Conflict: Jacob and Esau

The roots of hostility toward Israel actually begin in the very first Jewish family.

Two brothers.

One promise.

One birthright.

Genesis 25:23

“Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples shall be separated from your body; one people shall be stronger than the other, and the older shall serve the younger.”

Jacob and Esau were not just brothers.

They represented two spiritual trajectories that would echo through history.

  • Jacob would become Israel
  • Esau would become Edom

But the tension between them was immediate.

Genesis 27:41

“So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him.”

The Bible does not soften this moment.

Esau hated his brother.

Why?

Because Jacob carried the covenant promise of God.

Hatred Toward Israel Is Not a New Phenomenon

When people see growing criticism or hostility toward Israel today, it can feel shocking.

But Scripture shows us a pattern.

Israel has always been a lightning rod in history.

Consider the nations that rose against Israel:

  • Egypt
  • Amalek
  • Babylon
  • Persia
  • Rome

Yet despite exile, war, and persecution…

Israel still exists.

This alone is one of history’s greatest miracles.

Psalm 83:4

“They have said, ‘Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more.’”

Notice something incredible.

The same sentiment spoken thousands of years ago is still heard today.

The goal was always the same:

Erase Israel.

But God had other plans.

Why Israel Has Always Been Targeted

The hostility toward Israel is not merely political.

It is deeply spiritual.

Israel carries a unique role in God’s story.

Through Israel came:

  • The Torah
  • The prophets
  • The covenants
  • The promises
  • The Messiah

And that Messiah is Yeshua (Jesus).

John 4:22

Yeshua said:

“Salvation is from the Jews.”

Those words are radical.

The Jewish people were chosen to be the channel of redemption for the entire world.

And because of that calling, opposition has always followed.

When Demographics Change, Attitudes Often Change

Sociologists often point out that demographics influence political attitudes.

When populations shift, public opinion can shift too.

But Scripture reminds us that majorities do not determine truth.

Israel has often stood alone.

Numbers 23:9

“Behold, a people dwelling alone, not reckoning itself among the nations.”

Israel was never meant to blend into the world.

Its calling was different.

Its covenant was unique.

And that uniqueness has often produced tension.

Yeshua Warned That Hatred Would Spread

Yeshua did not promise an easy road for those connected to God’s covenant.

Instead, He warned that hatred would increase in the last days.

Matthew 24:9

“Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.”

Notice something powerful.

Yeshua didn’t say some nations.

He said:

All nations.

This doesn’t mean every individual will hate Israel.

But it does mean that global opposition should not surprise believers.

A Story from the Time of the Patriarchs

Imagine Jacob on the night he fled from Esau.

He was alone.

Terrified.

Unsure of the future.

His brother wanted him dead.

His homeland was behind him.

His destiny was unclear.

And yet…

God met him in a dream.

Genesis 28:15

“Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go… for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.”

That promise has echoed across 3,500 years.

Empires rose and fell.

Kings came and went.

But God kept His word.

The Problem Many Believers Are Facing Today

Many Messianic believers today wrestle with difficult questions:

  • Why is Israel constantly criticized?
  • Why do so many people misunderstand the Jewish people?
  • Why does hostility toward Israel seem to grow in cycles?

These questions are real.

And they deserve honest answers.

But the Bible reframes the issue.

The story of Israel is not ultimately about politics.

It is about covenant.

God’s Covenant With Israel Has Never Been Revoked

Long before modern nations existed, God made promises to Abraham.

Genesis 12:3

“I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

This promise is staggering.

Through Abraham’s descendants, blessing would reach the entire world.

And that blessing ultimately came through Yeshua.

Yeshua Wept Over Jerusalem

One of the most emotional moments in the Gospels happens when Yeshua approaches Jerusalem.

He doesn’t celebrate.

He doesn’t condemn.

He weeps.

Luke 19:41

“Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it.”

Yeshua’s heart for Israel was not political.

It was deeply personal.

Jerusalem was the city of the covenant.

The city of the prophets.

The city where redemption would unfold.

What Should Messianic Believers Do Today?

When public opinion turns negative, believers have a choice.

We can respond with fear.

Or we can respond with faith.

Here are several biblical responses.

1. Stay Rooted in Scripture

Public opinion changes.

God’s word does not.

Isaiah 40:8

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.”

2. Pray for Jerusalem

Prayer has always been central to God’s people.

Psalm 122:6

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May they prosper who love you.”

Prayer aligns our hearts with God’s purposes.

3. Walk in Humility

Supporting Israel does not mean hatred toward others.

Yeshua called His followers to love.

Even when misunderstood.

Matthew 5:44

“Love your enemies, bless those who curse you.”

This teaching remains radical today.

4. Remember the Bigger Story

Polls change.

History shifts.

But God’s plan moves forward.

Isaiah 46:10

“My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all My purpose.”

The Prophetic Hope That Still Stands

The story of Israel does not end in rejection.

It ends in restoration.

The prophets speak of a day when Jerusalem becomes a center of peace and truth.

Isaiah 2:3

“For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.”

That future is still unfolding.

The Final Lesson from Jacob and Esau

The story of Jacob and Esau began with hatred.

But it ended with something surprising.

Reconciliation.

Genesis 33:4

“But Esau ran to meet him, embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.”

Even ancient enemies can be healed.

Even broken families can reconcile.

Even nations can change.

And that is the hope believers hold onto.

A Final Word for Messianic Believers

If you are watching the world grow more critical of Israel, remember this:

You are not witnessing something new.

You are witnessing something ancient.

A story that began with Abraham.

A story carried through Jacob.

A story fulfilled through Yeshua.

And a story that is still unfolding today.

Because the God of Israel has not forgotten His promises.

And He never will.

Psalm 121:4

“Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”

The nations may shift.

Opinions may change.

But the covenant of God stands forever.
