Where is Ancient Ashdod Found Today - And Why Your Spiritual Battle Might Be Happening There Too
I didn’t expect the question to hit me so deeply.
“Where is Ancient Ashdod found today?”
At first, it sounded like a simple geography question… something you might Google and move on from.
But as I sat with it… prayed through it… and opened the Scriptures…
I realized something unsettling.
Ashdod isn’t just a place on a map.
Ashdod is a pattern.
A pattern that still shows up in our lives today.
π So… Where Is Ancient Ashdod Today?
Ancient Ashdod is located in modern-day Israel, near the Mediterranean coast—known today as
π Ashdod
It was one of the five major Philistine cities.
A place of influence.
A place of power.
And most importantly…
A place where the presence of God was mishandled, misunderstood, and dishonored.
⚠️ The Moment That Changed Everything
Let me take you into the story.
Israel had just lost a battle.
The Ark of the Covenant—the very symbol of God’s presence—was captured.
And where did the enemy take it?
To Ashdod.
To their temple.
To stand beside their god.
π Scripture says:
“When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon and set it by Dagon.”
— 1 Samuel 5:2
I remember reading this and feeling a weight in my spirit.
Because this wasn’t just about ancient history.
This was about what happens when the presence of God is placed in the wrong environment.
π The Hidden Problem Most People Miss
Let me be honest with you…
Many of us are doing the same thing today.
We carry the presence of God…
But we place it:
Next to compromise
Next to idols of success, control, comfort
Next to habits we refuse to surrender
We don’t reject God.
We just… reposition Him.
And that’s exactly what happened in Ashdod.
⚡ What Happened Next Will Shake You
The next morning…
Something unexplainable happened.
π
“When they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD.”
— 1 Samuel 5:3
I can almost see it.
The idol… face down.
Before the God of Israel.
But here’s what gets me…
They didn’t repent.
They didn’t turn.
They simply…
π Set Dagon back up again.
π And That’s Where It Hits Home
How many times have I done that?
How many times have you done that?
God exposes something in our lives…
A habit
A mindset
A relationship
A hidden idol
And instead of surrendering it…
We just prop it back up.
π₯ But God Wasn’t Finished
The next day…
It got worse.
π
“Behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off…”
— 1 Samuel 5:4
This wasn’t random.
This was intentional.
God was making a statement:
π “I will not share My glory.”
π§ What Ashdod Represents Spiritually
As I sat with this, I realized…
Ashdod represents a place where:
God’s presence is present… but not honored
Truth is known… but not obeyed
Power is visible… but not surrendered to
It’s a place of divided loyalty.
π‘ Now Let Me Ask You Something
Where is your Ashdod?
Not geographically.
Spiritually.
Is it:
Your work life vs your faith life?
Your private thoughts vs your public beliefs?
Your desire for control vs God’s call to trust?
Because Yeshua spoke directly into this tension.
π
“No man can serve two masters…”
— Matthew 6:24
That verse doesn’t whisper.
It confronts.
❤️ The Gentle But Firm Invitation of Yeshua
What I love about Yeshua (Jesus) is this:
He doesn’t just expose the problem…
He invites us into freedom.
π
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28
Ashdod is exhausting.
Living divided is exhausting.
Trying to balance God and idols is exhausting.
And Yeshua says:
π “You don’t have to live like that anymore.”
π The Breakthrough Most People Are Searching For
Here’s what I’ve learned—sometimes the hard way:
Breakthrough doesn’t come from trying harder.
It comes from removing what doesn’t belong next to God.
π ️ Practical Steps to Leave “Ashdod”
If you’re feeling this deeply… here’s where to start:
1. π§ Identify Your “Dagon”
Ask yourself honestly:
What am I afraid to let go of?
What do I run to instead of God?
2. π₯ Stop Rebuilding What God Is Tearing Down
If God has already exposed it…
Don’t rebuild it.
3. π Invite God Into the Space Fully
Not partially.
Not conditionally.
Fully.
π
“You shall have no other gods before Me.”
— Exodus 20:3
π The Hope That Changes Everything
Here’s the part that gives me peace…
God didn’t need Israel to defend Him in Ashdod.
He defended Himself.
And that means this:
π You don’t have to fight your idols alone.
When you surrender…
God moves.
π¬ Final Thought (This Stayed With Me…)
Ashdod still exists today.
Not just as a city…
But as a choice.
Every day we choose:
Presence or pressure
Surrender or control
Truth or comfort
And I’m learning…
Slowly, imperfectly…
That peace comes when I stop trying to make God fit into my life…
And instead…
π I align my life with Him.
If this spoke to you, sit with it. Pray through it. Don’t rush past it.
Because your breakthrough might be on the other side of one question:
“What am I still setting back up… that God already knocked down?”
