Breathe In the Blessing: How to Make the "Scent of Peace" Havdalah Spice Blend

Havdalah Spice Blend

A traditional Havdalah spice blend is fragrant, warming, and uplifting. It is used during the Havdalah ceremony at the close of Shabbat.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons whole cloves

  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon chips or broken cinnamon sticks

  • 1 tablespoon dried orange peel

  • 1 tablespoon cardamom pods

  • 1 teaspoon whole allspice berries

  • 1 teaspoon dried lavender buds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a small bowl.

  2. Lightly crush the spices with a mortar and pestle to release their aroma.

  3. Transfer to a decorative spice box or airtight container.

  4. Allow the blend to rest for 24 hours before use for the best fragrance.

Serving for Havdalah

  • Place a small amount in a besamim (spice) container.

  • During Havdalah, pass the spices around so everyone can enjoy their sweet aroma.

Variation
For a sweeter scent, add:

  • 1 teaspoon dried rose petals

  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

This blend makes a thoughtful homemade gift for Shabbat hosts, Jewish holidays, or family celebrations. ✨
