What is Forbidden During Niddah - The Shocking Biblical Truth Most People Never Learned - And Why It Might Change Your Marriage Forever

Have you ever read a passage in the Torah and thought:

"Wait... why didn't anyone explain this to me before?"

That was me.

One day I was sitting with my coffee, my Bible, and enough snacks to survive a minor wilderness journey.

I was reading through Leviticus.

Yes...

Leviticus.

The book many people accidentally use as a sleeping aid.

Five verses in and suddenly my eyes landed on something called Niddah.

I blinked.

I read it again.

Then I read it a third time because I thought maybe my coffee had stopped working.

What I discovered sent me on a fascinating journey through Torah, Jewish tradition, biblical holiness, marriage, intimacy, and God's design for His people.

And the truth is...

Many believers have heard the word.

Few understand it.

And even fewer understand what is actually forbidden during Niddah and why it matters.

What Is Niddah?

Niddah refers to a woman's menstrual cycle and the period of separation described in the Torah.

The command comes directly from Scripture:

"When a woman has a discharge, and the discharge from her body is blood, she shall be in her menstrual impurity for seven days..." (Leviticus 15:19)

For many people today, that verse raises more questions than answers.

Questions like:

  • What exactly is forbidden?
  • Why did God give this command?
  • Does it still have meaning today?
  • What can married couples learn from it?
  • Is Niddah about punishment or holiness?

These are important questions.

Because whenever God gives instructions, there is wisdom behind them.

The Mistake I Made

For years I assumed Niddah was simply an old ritual nobody needed to understand anymore.

Then I started studying Scripture more deeply.

I noticed something.

God never wastes words.

Not one.

Every command teaches something about holiness, boundaries, honor, respect, and relationship.

Suddenly Niddah wasn't merely about physical cycles.

It became a powerful lesson about God's order.

And honestly?

The more I studied, the more amazed I became.

What Is Forbidden During Niddah?

According to Torah and traditional Jewish understanding, marital intimacy is restricted during the Niddah period.

The Torah says:

"You shall not approach a woman to uncover her nakedness while she is in her menstrual uncleanness." (Leviticus 18:19)

This command established a period of separation regarding sexual relations.

But here's what shocked me.

God wasn't creating distance to destroy marriage.

He was creating boundaries that could strengthen it.

Think about it.

Human beings have a remarkable ability to take blessings for granted.

Including each other.

Especially each other.

Sometimes we appreciate our spouse the same way we appreciate the refrigerator.

We don't notice it until it stops working.

Suddenly everybody becomes a repair expert.

God's Wisdom Is Deeper Than We Think

Many couples struggle with:

  • Emotional disconnect
  • Lack of appreciation
  • Taking each other for granted
  • Routine replacing romance
  • Spiritual dryness

Yet biblical rhythms create opportunities for intentional connection.

Periods of restraint can create renewed appreciation.

Periods of waiting can create renewed gratitude.

Periods of separation can create renewed anticipation.

God's wisdom often works differently than the world's wisdom.

Yeshua and the Heart of Holiness

When Yeshua taught, He continually pointed people back to God's heart.

He said:

"If you love Me, keep My commandments." (John 14:15)

Notice something powerful.

Obedience isn't about earning God's love.

It's a response to God's love.

We obey because we trust Him.

We follow because His ways are good.

Even when we don't immediately understand them.

The Hidden Blessing Most People Miss

Many believers see biblical commands and ask:

"What am I not allowed to do?"

But perhaps a better question is:

"What blessing is God trying to protect?"

That changes everything.

Instead of seeing restrictions...

We begin seeing protection.

Instead of seeing burdens...

We begin seeing wisdom.

Instead of seeing rules...

We begin seeing relationship.

The prophet Isaiah wrote:

"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, declares the LORD." (Isaiah 55:8)

God often sees what we cannot.

Why This Matters Today

Modern culture tells us:

  • More is always better.
  • Boundaries are bad.
  • Self-control is outdated.
  • Ancient wisdom is irrelevant.

Yet people are lonelier than ever.

Marriages are struggling.

Families are under pressure.

Relationships are fractured.

Maybe...

Just maybe...

The Creator knew something we forgot.

A Funny Thought

Imagine explaining Niddah to modern society.

People might say:

"Wait... God wants us to practice self-control?"

Yes.

"On purpose?"

Yes.

"Voluntarily?"

Yes.

"Without a smartphone app reminding us?"

Yes.

At this point half the room faints.

The other half starts searching for emergency chocolate.

The Real Question

The question isn't merely:

"What is forbidden during Niddah?"

The deeper question is:

"What is God teaching us through Niddah?"

Because every biblical command reveals something about the character of God.

His holiness.

His wisdom.

His order.

His love.

His desire for His people to walk closely with Him.

As Moses declared:

"The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever..." (Deuteronomy 29:29)

Niddah is one of those revealed things.

A biblical topic that deserves thoughtful study rather than confusion or neglect.
