Matthew 5:9 Military

Matthew 5:9 Military

Matthew 5:9 Military

In Matthew 5:9, Yeshua (Jesus) says:

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God."

When this is applied to the military, there are a few different perspectives among sincere believers.

1. Soldiers can be peacemakers.

Some believers in Jesus believe that military service can be a legitimate way to protect innocent people, stop evil, and preserve peace. In this view, a soldier who serves with justice, restraint, and integrity can be a "peacemaker" by preventing violence from spreading. The goal is not war itself but the restoration of peace.

2. Peacemaking is more than avoiding conflict.

The Greek word translated "peacemakers" implies people who actively work to establish peace and reconciliation. It is not passive. Whether someone is a soldier, police officer, diplomat, or civilian, the focus is on seeking justice, protecting others, and pursuing peace whenever possible.

3. Some believers are pacifists.

Others interpret Yeshua's teaching to mean that His followers should not participate in warfare at all, believing that His kingdom advances through love, forgiveness, and nonviolence. This has been the historic position of some Christian traditions.

From a Messianic Jewish perspective, many point out that the Scriptures recognize the reality of just warfare. The Hebrew Bible contains examples of God commanding Israel to fight under specific circumstances, while also consistently presenting peace (shalom) as God's ultimate desire.

Yeshua did not condemn soldiers simply for being soldiers, and told soldiers to act justly and avoid extortion rather than telling them to leave military service (see 3:14).

So, Matthew 5:9 does not necessarily prohibit military service. Instead, it challenges everyone—including those in the military—to pursue justice, protect the innocent, avoid unnecessary violence, and seek true shalom whenever possible.

The verse asks not simply, "Are you willing to fight?" but also, "Are you committed to creating and preserving peace?" That is the heart of being a peacemaker.
