To Whom Do We Report The Police | When The Protectors Become The Threat

To Whom Do We Report The Police | When The Protectors Become The Threat

When the Protectors Become the Threat: A Faith Reflection on Justice, Trust, and Community

A Story to Begin

It was a quiet afternoon in a small town when a mother heard a knock at her door. She expected a neighbor, maybe a package delivery. But instead, two uniformed officers stood there. She thought, Surely, they are here to protect us. Yet what followed was not protection—it was intimidation. Property was taken, threats were made, and the very people sworn to serve had become a source of fear.

Stories like this are not distant rumors. Many of us have heard whispers in our own neighborhoods: of those in power abusing their authority, of officers crossing the line, and of ordinary people left feeling voiceless. And so the question arises with a deep ache in our hearts: to whom do we report the police when they are the ones stealing, threatening, or harming instead of safeguarding?

This is not just a legal or political question—it is a profoundly spiritual one. Because at its root, it touches on justice, trust, authority, and our hope in HaShem’s unshakable kingdom.

Feeling the Weight of Injustice

If you have ever felt helpless before unjust authority, you are not alone. The Scriptures are filled with men and women who endured unfair rulers, corrupt judges, and leaders who abused their power.

King David himself cried out in Psalm 82:2:

> “How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked?”

This verse reminds us that the reality of corrupt leadership is not new. The people of Israel often experienced it. But David did not stop at despair—he turned his heart toward HaShem, the only true Judge, the Defender of the weak, the Avenger of wrongs.

When those sworn to uphold justice turn instead to oppression, we must remember: they are not the final word.

Yeshua’s Perspective on Authority

In the Gospels, Yeshua spoke to this very tension. In Matthew 20:25-26 He said:

> “You know that the rulers of the nations lord it over them, and the great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant.”

Here Yeshua acknowledges the reality: rulers often use power to dominate. But He redefines greatness—not in terms of authority wielded, but in humility, service, and justice.

This applies in our lives today. We may encounter leaders—whether in uniforms, offices, or even pulpits—who misuse authority. Yet Yeshua shows us what true authority looks like: selfless service rooted in love and justice. His kingdom stands in contrast to the broken kingdoms of this world.

Our First Place of Appeal: The Heavenly Court

When earthly systems fail us, our cries ascend to the Heavenly Court. Scripture declares in Proverbs 15:3:

> “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.”

Even if no earthly authority will hear us, Heaven sees. Heaven records. Heaven will act.

This does not mean we never seek earthly justice—indeed, laws and appeals can and should be made. But when those avenues seem blocked, we can take comfort that nothing escapes the gaze of our Righteous Judge. His timing may not be ours, but His justice is sure.

Learning Patience Without Losing Courage

Isaiah spoke words of hope to a weary people:

Isaiah 1:17:

> “Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.”

This is both a call and a comfort. It reminds us that our role is not to give up or be silent in the face of injustice. We may not control the systems of this world, but we can embody the values of the Kingdom—doing good, seeking justice, lifting up the vulnerable.

This may mean speaking truth, sharing stories, praying with persistence, or even standing in solidarity with those who are wronged. In all this, HaShem strengthens us so we don’t lose courage.

Practical Reflection: Where Do We Go from Here?

So, practically speaking, to whom do we report when the police themselves are corrupt?

1. To Heaven first. Bring the matter before HaShem in prayer, just as the Psalmists did. Cry out for His intervention and justice.

2. To community. We are not called to walk alone. Share the burden with trusted brothers and sisters in faith. Together, we discern and support one another.

3. To earthly authorities—where possible. There are oversight structures, courts, and advocacy organizations. While they may not always succeed, we are called to seek justice through lawful means.

4. To future generations. Teach your children and community the difference between true authority under God and false authority rooted in corruption. This safeguards hearts from despair and prepares them to stand strong.

Walking in Hope

Though it may feel overwhelming, remember Yeshua’s words in John 16:33:

> “In this world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

This promise is our anchor. Corruption will not have the final word. Injustice will not reign forever. Our Messiah has already secured the victory, and one day every authority will bow before Him.

A Gentle Invitation

Dear friends, if this message has stirred something in your heart, know this: you are not alone. We walk this path together as a community of faith in Yeshua. We long for His justice, and we encourage one another until that day comes.

If you feel led, I invite you to join in this mission—not through pressure, but through love. You can pray with us. You can share these words with someone who needs encouragement. You can support through kindness, encouragement, or giving, as the Spirit leads.

Above all, let us remain united, keeping our eyes fixed on Yeshua, the Righteous Judge, until His kingdom comes in fullness.

Shalom and blessings, dear brothers and sisters.
