When The Screen Goes Dark | A Light That Cannot Be Extinguished

When The Screen Goes Dark | A Light That Cannot Be Extinguished

The glow was the last thing to fade. For a moment, the screen of her phone was a lifeline—a window to her daughter’s face, a portal to news of the outside world, a digital tether to a community of faith that met in a chat group every Wednesday night. Then, without warning, it vanished. Not a dead battery, not a dropped signal. A state-enforced silence. A digital curtain drawn across an entire nation.

Maria (not her real name) sat in the sudden, oppressive quiet of her apartment. The familiar hum of the router was gone. The little green lights were all out. A cold dread settled in her stomach. This wasn’t just an inconvenience. It was an isolation. How would she know if the peaceful protests led by the local pastors remained peaceful? How would she tell her family abroad she was safe? How would she access her digital Bible, her daily devotions, the encouraging sermons that fueled her spirit?

In that darkness, a more profound fear whispered: You are alone. You are in the dark. No one can see you, and you can see nothing.

This is the reality for millions around the world. In an age where education, commerce, healthcare, and community increasingly depend on a connected world, the act of shutting down the internet is not merely a political tactic. It is a spiritual one. It is a deliberate attempt to plunge people into a wilderness of disinformation and fear, to sever the lines of communication that foster unity and truth, and to make a population easier to control by keeping them in the dark. It is, as the scripture says, a tool of destruction rooted in a rejection of knowledge.

If you have ever felt this shadow, whether through a full internet blackout or the more subtle ways truth is suppressed in your own context, know this: you are not alone. Your fear is valid, your frustration is holy, and your longing for light is a prayer God hears. This is a spiritual battle, and we are called to understand it through the lens of His eternal truth.

The Strategy of Shadows: Why Truth is Feared

The prophet Hosea spoke a chilling word from the Lord to a nation in decline: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.” (Hosea 4:6, NKJV)

This verse cuts to the heart of the matter. Destruction follows a lack of knowledge. But it’s not a simple ignorance; it’s a rejected knowledge. Dictatorial leaders, occultic in their desire to wield power over people rather than serve them, understand this principle well. Their power is maintained not just by force, but by controlling the narrative. They must make people forget the law of God—the law that says every human is made in His image with inherent dignity and rights. They must make people forget true knowledge—the knowledge of a world beyond their propaganda, the knowledge of a God who is higher than their authority.

Turning off the internet is a modern embodiment of this ancient strategy. It is a forced rejection of knowledge. It says, "You may not access information. You may not communicate freely. You may not remember there is a world that operates differently." It is an attempt to make a people forget, so they can be controlled, and ultimately, destroyed.

The Gospel Response: Shining His Light in the Darkness

In the face of such overwhelming control, we can feel powerless. But the Gospel of John presents us with a truth that no government can ever router or switch off.

“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” (John 1:4-5, NKJV)

The Greek word for “comprehend” here (katalambanō) is rich with meaning. It can mean to understand, but it also means to overtake, to overcome, to seize. The darkness has neither understood the light nor has it been able to extinguish it. This is our hope.

In practical terms, this means: The light of Christ—the truth of His love, the reality of His kingdom, the power of His Spirit—exists independently of any internet connection. It shines in the secret prayers of a believer. It shines in the whispered encouragement between neighbors. It shines in the courage of those who risk everything to share truth through underground networks. The darkness of oppression, no matter how thick, cannot ultimately overcome or extinguish this light. Our role is to be carriers of this light, to live in such a way that our very lives become a Wi-Fi signal of God’s hope and truth, even when all other signals are jammed.

An Old Testament Refuge: Our Ever-Present Help

When we feel isolated and cut off, it is easy to believe the lie that we are abandoned. The Psalms give us a language of raw honesty and triumphant faith to combat this feeling.

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.” (Psalm 46:1-2, NKJV)

A “very present help.” Not a distant, historical help. Not a future, hoped-for help. A present help. Right now. In the room where the internet is off. In the heart that is afraid. In the silence that feels so loud.

In practical terms, this means: When external systems fail, our internal refuge stands firm. Our connection to God is not subject to bandwidth, firewalls, or government decrees. It is open 24/7 through prayer, through worship, through meditating on His Word (which we can store in our hearts, not just on our devices). This psalm encourages us to make our relationship with God our primary network. When other networks go down, this one remains steadfast, providing strength that goes beyond our circumstances and a peace that defies all understanding.

Our Call to Action: How We Can Be the Light

This is not a struggle for those in distant lands alone. It is a spiritual battle between light and darkness that plays out in every nation, in every heart. We are called to stand together.

1. Pray Without Ceasing: Pray for those living under digital blackouts. Pray for wisdom for dissidents and pastors. Pray that God would make a way for truth to get through—whether through satellite technology, old-fashioned leaflets, or dreams and visions. Pray that the plans of the enemy would be confused and come to nothing.

2. Share Truth Responsibly: In a world of misinformation, be a source of verified, compassionate truth. Use your online presence to shine a light on oppression and to share the hope of the Gospel. Be a "signal booster" for good news.

3. Store His Word in Your Heart: Let’s not let our faith be entirely digital. Memorize scripture. Have a physical Bible. The time may never come when it’s taken away, but its truth embedded in your soul is a constant source of strength that can never be deleted.

4. Support the Front Lines: There are incredible faith-based organizations working to get Bibles, technology, and practical support to the persecuted church and to people living under oppressive regimes. They are the hands and feet of Jesus, restoring knowledge and connection.
