Meta Description:

Struggling under the weight of family patterns and generational bondage? Learn how to break ancestral curses using powerful Old Testament principles and the words of Jesus Himself. Discover the biblical path to freedom today.

How Do I Get Rid of an Ancestral Curse That My Forefathers Brought Upon Our Family?

Are you feeling trapped in a cycle of hardship, illness, poverty, addiction, or broken relationships—patterns that seem to run through your family line like a shadow? Does it seem like your life is being weighed down by burdens that didn’t start with you? If so, you may be battling an ancestral curse—a spiritual consequence of sins committed by those who came before you.

You’re not alone. Many believers wrestle with these invisible chains. But the Word of God offers hope, healing, and deliverance—not from the teachings of men, but from the eternal truths spoken in the Old Testament and directly from the lips of Jesus Christ.

This is not just theology. This is your freedom.

What Is an Ancestral Curse According to the Bible?

Ancestral (or generational) curses are patterns of suffering or bondage believed to be passed down from one generation to another due to the sins of ancestors. These curses can manifest spiritually, emotionally, financially, or physically.

Exodus 20:5 (KJV) says:

“Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.”

This verse reveals that the consequences of sin can ripple through generations. But this is not to say God is unfair. It's a spiritual law—what is sown will be reaped (see Exodus 34:7). Our ancestors may have opened doors that gave the enemy a legal right to afflict families. But God also gives us the power to shut those doors forever.

Signs You May Be Dealing with an Ancestral Curse

  • Repeated cycles of addiction or alcoholism

  • Chronic sicknesses that afflict family members

  • Mental illness that appears generational

  • Poverty or financial instability that never seems to break

  • Marital breakdowns that repeat through generations

  • Premature deaths or suicides

  • Occult involvement in the family history

  • Dreams involving snakes, ancestral altars, or dead relatives

These signs are not a diagnosis—but if you see repeated patterns that defy logic, it’s worth taking them to prayer.

What Did Jesus Say About Ancestral Curses?

Many people wrongly believe they must stay bound because of their family's past. But Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil and set the captives free.

In John 8:36, Jesus said:

“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

And in Luke 4:18, He declared His mission:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.”

Jesus came to undo generational captivity. Your story can change—starting today.

Old Testament Examples of Breaking Generational Curses

1. Hezekiah Cleansed His Father's Wicked Legacy

In 2 Kings 18:1-7, Hezekiah’s father, King Ahaz, had committed terrible sins and brought judgment on the land. But Hezekiah turned his back on his father’s idols and tore them down.

“He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves...He trusted in the Lord God of Israel...” (2 Kings 18:4-5)

His obedience broke the curse and brought blessing.

2. Gideon Tore Down His Father's Altar
In Judges 6:25-27, God told Gideon to destroy his father's altar to Baal before he could save Israel.

“Take thy father’s young bullock...and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it.”

Obedience to God dismantled the foundation of bondage and opened the way to victory.

How to Break Ancestral Curses Biblically

Here’s how to confront and break ancestral curses using God’s Word—not superstition or human traditions.

1. Acknowledge the Pattern and Repent

Start by identifying any sinful patterns in your family line—idolatry, occult practices, bloodshed, injustice, sexual sin, etc.

Then humbly repent, even on behalf of your forefathers.

Leviticus 26:40 (KJV):
“If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers...”

2. Renounce the Curse in Jesus’ Name

Use the authority of Christ to renounce the sins of your ancestors and sever ties to demonic oppression.

Matthew 10:1 (KJV):
“And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.”

3. Tear Down Spiritual Altars

Just as Gideon tore down physical altars, you must spiritually remove any ancestral altars through prayer and fasting.

Deuteronomy 7:5 (KJV):
“But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images...”

Any items, objects, or practices tied to ancestral worship or the occult should be destroyed.

4. Apply the Blood of Jesus Over Your Family

Even though we’re drawing verses from the Gospels and Old Testament, remember the power of Jesus’ sacrifice. Jesus is the Lamb of God—like the Passover lamb whose blood marked the doors of protection.

Exodus 12:13 (KJV):
“When I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you...”

The blood still speaks (see Matthew 26:28). Plead the blood over your home and lineage.

5. Break the Legal Rights of the Enemy

Satan works through legal rights. Once you’ve repented and renounced, declare that any claim the enemy had is now broken.

Deuteronomy 24:16 (KJV):
“The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.”

You are no longer held accountable for your father’s sins once you come into the covenant of God.

A Deliverance Prayer to Break Ancestral Curses

“Heavenly Father, I come before You in the name of Jesus, and I humbly confess the sins of my forefathers. I renounce every generational curse that has come upon my bloodline through idolatry, witchcraft, immorality, or bloodshed.
I break every covenant made with darkness, knowingly or unknowingly. By the blood of Jesus, I sever every tie to ancestral bondage. Let every evil altar raised against me be consumed by Your holy fire.
Lord Jesus, deliver me now. Set my family free from every chain. I declare that I am no longer bound by the past—I walk in the freedom You purchased. Amen.”

Final Word: You Don’t Have to Live in Bondage

Ancestral curses are real—but so is the power of redemption. Your family may have walked in darkness, but you can be the one who chooses the light. Like Gideon, like Hezekiah, like Abraham—you can be the beginning of a new story.

Deuteronomy 30:19 (KJV):
“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.”

You have the choice. The curse stops with you.
