Rosh Hashanah, The Feast of Trumpets: Awakening to the Shofar Blast of the Coming King

Each year, as the sun sets and the seventh month of Tishrei begins, the sound of the shofar pierces the air — ancient, raw, urgent. It is a blast that stirs the soul, awakens the spirit, and calls a people to remember, repent, and return. This is Rosh Hashanah, also known in Scripture as Yom Teruah, the Feast of Trumpets (Leviticus 23:23–25).

But what if this holy day is more than a ritual?
What if it's a rehearsal for the final act of redemption?

For Messianic believers, Rosh Hashanah is not only about the beginning of the civil year — it is a divine wake-up call that connects directly to the message of Yeshua (Jesus), the Gospel of the Kingdom, and the resurrection hope promised in the Hebrew Scriptures.
Let us journey through the ancient texts — from Torah to the words of the Messiah — to uncover the trumpet’s call for this generation.

What Is Rosh Hashanah, the Feast of Trumpets?

The Torah tells us:

“Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a sabbath-rest, a memorial of blowing of trumpets (זִכְרוֹן תְּרוּעָה), a holy convocation.’”
Leviticus 23:24

Yom Teruah, literally meaning “Day of Trumpet Blasts,” is one of the mo’edim (appointed times) of the LORD. It is a sacred memorial, a day not rooted in historical events like Passover or Sukkot — but in prophetic purpose.

But a memorial of what?

The Hebrew word for trumpet blast, teruah, is used in Scripture to describe:

  • The alarm of war

  • A cry of jubilation

  • The shout of the King’s arrival

In Numbers 10:9, the blast of trumpets was used in warfare. In Psalm 47:5, it is tied to God's ascension. In Exodus 19:16–19, Mount Sinai shook at the sound of the shofar — a divine encounter unlike any other.

This feast prophetically points forward. It is a divine alarm clock, preparing hearts for judgment, kingship, and resurrection.

The Gospel of Yeshua and the Shofar of the Kingdom

Yeshua came proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God:

“Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”
Matthew 4:17

But He also spoke in mysteries, revealing that before the Kingdom would be established in full, there would be a separation, a testing, a time of waiting — and then the trumpet.

📯 The Trumpet in the Words of Jesus

“And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”
Matthew 24:31

This is not metaphor. This is Yom Teruah language. A literal trumpet that announces:

  • The coming of the King

  • The resurrection of the righteous

  • The gathering of God’s people

Yeshua was echoing the prophets. He was revealing that the shofar of Rosh Hashanah would find its ultimate fulfillment in the final redemption.

The Resurrection: A Teruah of Hope

Yeshua spoke with clarity about the resurrection — not only as an abstract belief, but as a coming reality tied to His voice:

“Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.”
John 5:25

Just as the shofar was heard at Sinai, His voice will awaken the dead.
Rosh Hashanah is a rehearsal for the resurrection — a time to examine our hearts, prepare our lamps, and look to the horizon.

In the Prophet Isaiah, we read:

“Your dead shall live; together with my dead body they shall arise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust; for your dew is like the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.”
Isaiah 26:19

Rosh Hashanah stirs resurrection faith. It invites us to live in hopeful expectation — not fear.

Problem: Many Are Asleep — Unaware of the Time

Yeshua warned often that many would be spiritually asleep at His coming:

“Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.”
Matthew 24:42

The world dulls the senses. The enemy sows slumber.
But Rosh Hashanah declares: WAKE UP! The King is coming!

This is not just about repentance — it’s about realignment:

  • Are we alert to the signs of the times?

  • Are we preparing our hearts?

  • Are we proclaiming the Kingdom of God?

The Return of the Messiah and the Coronation of the King

In Jewish tradition, Rosh Hashanah is also the coronation of the King — when the people proclaim: “The LORD reigns!”

This tradition aligns with Messianic hope. When Yeshua returns, it will be as King of Kings:

“Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven... and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”
Matthew 24:30

The shofar announces not just His coming — but His kingship.
It is a call to loyalty. A cry to return. A sound of war — and a sound of peace.

Solution: Return, Remember, Rejoice

Rosh Hashanah isn’t just a calendar event — it is a divine invitation.

🕊 Return — In Hebrew, teshuvah, repentance, is a return to covenant love.
📖 Remember — Meditate on the promises of the prophets and the words of Yeshua.
🎺 Rejoice — The King is coming. The trumpet will sound. Death will not win.

Let the Shofar Sound in Your Heart Today

“Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound (teruah)! They walk, O Lord, in the light of Your countenance.”
Psalm 89:15

If you are discouraged, distracted, or weary — the Feast of Trumpets brings hope:

  • The King will return.

  • The righteous will rise.

  • Justice will reign.

  • The Kingdom will be restored.

Let the blast of the shofar awaken your soul.
Let the words of Yeshua echo louder than fear.
Let your life be a trumpet that announces the King of Glory.

Final Thought: Are You Ready for the Last Trumpet?

The shofar of Rosh Hashanah is a shadow — but a very real one.
It points to a future day when the King will come — not as a suffering servant, but as the victorious Redeemer.

And He said:

“Behold, I am coming quickly! Blessed is he who watches…”
Revelation 22:12 (spoken by Yeshua)

May your ears be open, your heart prepared, and your life aligned.
The trumpet is sounding. Will you answer the call?
