No-Work Days During Sukkot (According to Torah)

1. The First Day of Sukkot

   • Leviticus 23:35 – “On the first day there shall be a holy convocation; you shall not do any ordinary work.”

   • This means the 1st day of the feast (15th of Tishrei) is a Shabbat-like rest day, where no “ordinary work” is permitted.

2. The Eighth Day (Shemini Atzeret)

   • Leviticus 23:36 – “On the eighth day you shall hold a holy convocation and present a food offering to the LORD. It is a solemn assembly; you shall not do any ordinary work.”

   • This is the day immediately following the seven days of Sukkot (22nd of Tishrei).

   • Though connected to Sukkot, it is also treated as its own festival day (Shemini Atzeret, “Eighth Day Assembly”), and likewise is a no-work day.

Clarification

• The intermediate days (Chol HaMoed, Days 2–7) – The Torah doesn’t call these “no work days.” Work is generally permitted, though traditionally limited to things needed for the festival or essential tasks.
