How Many Species Of Trees Are Required During Sukkot

That’s a beautiful question — and very meaningful for Sukkot ๐ŸŒฟ

According to the Torah, four species (Hebrew: Arba’at HaMinim) are required for Sukkot. These are mentioned specifically in Leviticus 23:40:

> “And you shall take on the first day the fruit of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and the boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook; and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days.”

— Leviticus 23:40 (KJV)

๐ŸŒฟ The Four Species (Arba’at HaMinim)

1. Etrog (ืืชืจื•ื’) — The Fruit of a Goodly Tree

This is the citron, a fragrant citrus fruit symbolizing the heart, representing devotion and understanding.

It is called pri etz hadar (“fruit of a beautiful tree”) in Hebrew.

2. Lulav (ืœื•ืœื‘) — Branch of a Palm Tree

A palm branch, tall and straight, representing the spine, standing for uprightness and strength in faith.

3. Hadas (ื”ื“ืก) — Boughs of Thick Trees

These are myrtle branches, with leaves shaped like eyes, symbolizing spiritual vision and the importance of seeing goodness.

4. Aravah (ืขืจื‘ื”) — Willows of the Brook

The willow branches, with long, smooth leaves shaped like lips, symbolizing prayer and speech.

✨ Spiritual Meaning

Together, the four species represent the unity of the people of Israel — each person different yet bound together in worship.

Just as each plant has its own fragrance and form, each believer brings unique gifts before Adonai.

When we wave the lulav and etrog in six directions — east, south, west, north, up, and down — we proclaim that God’s presence fills all the earth:

> “The earth is the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.”

— Psalm 24:1

And in the words of Yeshua (Jesus):

> “I am the vine, you are the branches. He that abides in Me, and I in him, the same brings forth much fruit: for without Me you can do nothing.”

— John 15:5
