HANUKKAH CANDLE LIGHTING BLESSINGS

Use this guide each night of Hanukkah as you light the candles on your menorah.
Light the shamash (helper candle) first, then use it to light the other candles—adding one each night, from right to left.
After lighting, take a moment to reflect on the theme of the night.

BLESSING 1 — Over the Candles (L’hadlik Ner Shel Chanukah)

English:
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to kindle the Hanukkah lights.

Hebrew:
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם,
אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו וְצִוָּנוּ לְהַדְלִיק נֵר שֶׁל חֲנֻכָּה.

Transliteration:
Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech ha’olam,
asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu l’hadlik ner shel Chanukah.

BLESSING 2 — For the Miracles (She’asah Nisim)

English:
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who performed miracles for our ancestors in those days at this time.

Hebrew:
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם,
שֶׁעָשָׂה נִסִּים לַאֲבוֹתֵינוּ, בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם בַּזְּמַן הַזֶּה.

Transliteration:
Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech ha’olam,
she’asah nisim la’avoteinu bayamim ha’hem bazman hazeh.

English:
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has given us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this season.

Hebrew:

שֶׁהֶחֱיָנוּ וְקִיְּמָנוּ וְהִגִּיעָנוּ לַזְּמַן הַזֶּה.

shehecheyanu v’kiy’manu v’higianu lazman hazeh.
