🍇 Jewish Food Blessings – Brachot Before Eating

1️⃣ Blessing Over Bread (HaMotzi – הַמּוֹצִיא)

Used for bread made from the five grains (wheat, barley, rye, oats, spelt).

English:

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.

Hebrew:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם,
הַמּוֹצִיא לֶחֶם מִן הָאָרֶץ.

Transliteration:

Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha’olam,
haMotzi lechem min ha’aretz.


2️⃣ Blessing Over Wine or Grape Juice (Borei P’ri HaGafen – בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הַגָּפֶן)

Used for wine or grape juice.

English:

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.

Hebrew:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם,
בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הַגָּפֶן.

3️⃣ Blessing Over Fruits That Grow on Trees (Borei P’ri Ha’etz – בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הָעֵץ)

Used for tree fruits (apples, oranges, dates, figs, etc.).

English:

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the tree.

Hebrew:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם,
בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הָעֵץ.

4️⃣ Blessing Over Vegetables and Foods from the Ground (Borei P’ri Ha’adamah – בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הָאֲדָמָה)

Used for vegetables, legumes, potatoes, and foods that grow directly from the ground.

English:

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the ground.

Used for cakes, cookies, pasta, pastries, and grain products that are not bread.

Hebrew:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם,
בּוֹרֵא מִינֵי מְזוֹנוֹת.

Transliteration:

borei minei mezonot.


6️⃣ Blessing Over All Other Foods (Shehakol – שֶׁהַכֹּל)

Used for meat, fish, eggs, dairy, drinks (except wine), and all other foods not covered above.

English:

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, by whose word all things came to be.

Hebrew:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם,
שֶׁהַכֹּל נִהְיָה בִּדְבָרוֹ.

Transliteration:

Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech ha’olam,
shehakol nihyah bidvaro.


7️⃣ Blessing After Eating Bread (Birkat HaMazon – Grace After Meals – בִּרְכַּת הַמָּזוֹן)

This is the full after-meal blessing, but here’s the short opening line often recited in brief form.

English (short version):

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who nourishes the entire world with goodness, grace, kindness, and mercy.

Hebrew:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, אֱלֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם,
הַזָּן אֶת הָעוֹלָם כֻּלּוֹ בְּטוּבוֹ, בְּחֵן, בְּחֶסֶד וּבְרַחֲמִים.
